Customer partnerships create meaningful employee experiences

At BILL, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) aren’t just ideals—they’re at the core of who we are. We’re committed to making BILL a place where employees can thrive as their authentic selves and channel the same inclusive energy into supporting customers from all different walks of life. 

Our DEI strategy is a call to action. It drives us to create a culture where diversity is cultivated and celebrated. Our culture of belonging extends beyond our walls and into the communities we serve.

In this Q&A, we sit down with Director, Workplace Services and Operations, Jamil Mitchell, to dive into our goal to use our platform and reach to spotlight women, minority, veteran, disability, and LGBTQ-owned businesses. We’re proud to support our diverse customer base—championing their success is a key part of our own story. 

1. What does the Workplace Experience team at BILL do?

Our vision is to enhance the workplace experience by creating safe spaces that promote community, connection, belonging, and fun. We focus on ensuring our employees feel comfortable and inspired to do their best work. My team curates incredible experiences through event planning, swag distribution, food services, and even our company-wide recognition program.

2. How does your team support BILL’s values in the workplace?

Our BILL values—humble, authentic, passionate, accountable, and fun—are central to everything we do. Whether we’re spotlighting minority-owned businesses or sourcing products from our customers, we approach each decision with humility, passion, and a commitment to excellence. We also make sure to have fun along the way!

3. How does the Workplace Experience team partner with BILL customers?

We feature our customers across our offices and events; everything from snacks and beverages in the office to large-scale employee parties. For instance, during our Party in the Park event, we used a customer’s event production company and sourced swag from several BILL customers. It’s rewarding to see it all come full circle—–supporting our customers’ businesses while they support us.

4. Can you share a memorable customer success story?

In celebration of Black History Month, BILL'd Black; an ERG that I am a co-lead of (alongside Chelsea McLaughlin-Arroyo) hosted a fireside chat with BILL customer, Sadé Jennings. Sade is the owner and operator of MFABI, a company that provides logistics and fulfillment consulting.

It was so rewarding to have a large number of our employees hear from a customer that offered extremely valuable feedback and insight into her experience as a Black business owner. To me this is one example of many that shows our loyalty and dedication to integrating our customers into our business, providing a platform to highlight their journey, and listening to feedback that ultimately helps better our product and the overall customer experience. This was a memorable experience that I am grateful to have helped lead and be a part of.

5. What’s next for your team’s efforts?

We’re excited to deepen our storytelling around customers. It’s powerful when we can share how they started, connect it to their journey with BILL, and highlight the mutual support we offer. This effort will continue to evolve throughout our employee experience as BILL grows.
